DU Politics & Memoir: A Student Collective

My dear friend Nancy is a Political Science professor at DU.
Last semester she taught a Freshman CoverCoverorientation class.
She best describes the unfolding of the project this way:

"An easy refrain around DU is that we are not
a very diverse campus. But with each new
week in this First-Year Seminar we found
out how untrue this was, even within a
group that might have appeared on the
surface to be fairly homogeneous. The
memoirs we read by experienced authors
awakened us to the complexities of social
location, historical legacy, privilege, and
power. Then, as students began applying
the theoretical tools of the course to
reflect on their own autobiographies, our
conversations deepened appreciably.
"

She asked if I would like to help put these essays together in the form of a book.

I said "Gladly."

Objective:
Take 17 student's essays and blog exerpts and create a printed bound book

Solution:
I realized that most of the budget would probably be eat up with printing cost. I went on line to price out the best options. The sites that best came within budget were Instant Publisher and Lulu. We ended up choosing Instant Publisher due to the fact that they would print specific amount of inside color pages and Lulu would not (read all or nothing).

These essays are sacred and personal stories of students on how they see themselves in the world. I wanted to convey that fragility through broken type and bitmapped imagery.

We are in the final proofing stages. Looking forward to see it all in print.

I think the students will also be pretty happy with the outcome.
